Dr. Jorge A. Fortun is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and serves as Medical Director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Lois Pope center for Macular and Retinal Degeneration and Ambulatory Surgical Center in Palm Beach Gardens. He obtained his B.S. in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University with summa cum laude honors. He went on to receive his M.D. with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He then completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at the Cullen Eye Institute of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He went on to subspecialty training, completing a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the Emory University Eye Center in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Fortun’s area of practice specialty is in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the macula, retina and vitreous. He serves as principal investigator in a number of clinical trials investigating therapies for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy among other diseases. He has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters and is a frequent invited lecturer at national and international meetings. He sits on the executive board of the Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology and on the board of directors of the Vitrectomy-Buckle Society. He has received senior honor awards from the AAO and ASRS. His ongoing professional and research interests include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, innovations in vitreoretinal surgery, telemedicine and international ophthalmic education.
